I just went out and got a secondhand/new to me toaster. Here are the bennies of this action:1. One human had a really nice toaster she just didn’t use. I came into her home and free-ed her of it. How nice is that!?! And she got some cash to boot.2. Instead of paying $90 for a really nice toaster, I only paid $15. This toaster barely had a crumb and I saved a ton.3. And here’s my favorite part: I don’t have to deal with any packaging. Just a quick little polish up and it’s good to go. So nice.I took the subway and from door to door it was 20 mins: super easy and low impact. I mean it: circular is so sexy. 🌳️

This winter my heart is with the polar bears (as well as the rest of the entire arctic ecosystem and indigenous culture that are at risk). With each Sutter Larkin purchase, 20% of that sale is automatically donated to the awesome Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign. They are a coalition of Indigenous People, Alaskans, Wildlife Enthusiasts, Conservationists, Veterans, Sportsmen, Athletes, People of Faith, Scientists and people like you committed to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You can find Sutter Larkin exclusively at Filosano.

Americans throws away approximately 80 lbs. of clothing per person, per year. Many of those items are synthetic, which take hundreds of years to decompose (and when they do, those toxins make their way into our water systems and food chains). Researchers estimate that the fashion industry is globally responsible for 10% of CO2 emissions, 20% of industrial wastewater, 24% of insecticides and 11% of pesticides used. Extending the life of clothes reduces carbon, water and waste footprints. So don’t toss it. Instead, extend the wear (aka go circular).•One way is through resale, like Patagonia’s Worn Wear program. As long as your items meet their criteria (clean, in good condition) they will buy back almost anything they make (there are exceptions such as next to skin items like swimsuits and underwear, naturally). After cleaning things up, they will resell garments through their Worn Wear website, extending the wear of these items. https://wornwear.patagonia.com•Less landfill. Decreasing the footprint. And today I walked away with $100 store credit. Oh hell yeah.•Other brands are doing similar programs. I’m also a big fan of Taylor Stitch’s Restitch and vintage program. Definitely check them out. https://restitch.taylorstitch.com

There is scientific proof that the clothes you wear have a direct effect of how you feel and carry yourself. Hence my chosen attire for today: I needed to remind myself that I am an Earth Warrior. I know that change is not served on a silver platter, with sparkles and champagne. I know that part of the process includes struggle and loss: with what’s going on in the Amazon and the Endangered Species Act is proving that. What I couldn’t possible imagine was how hard it was going to hurt when those major blows become the limelight. I have allow myself to go through the emotions so I can be done with them. Then I paused and chose how I want to react. This time I’ve chosen resilience and determination. I know that energy follows thought – by putting myself into this mindset I become it. If you are feeling overwhelmed, defeated and hopeless, that’s OK. Allow yourself to feel that way, but don’t let those feelings determined your direction. If you need a little help getting out of your funk, treat yourself with love and kindness. Maybe get outside and breathe deep with your face in the sun. It’s always good to read something that inspires you. Or it can be as simple as putting on your favorite sweatshirt. Then enjoy the magic of self-love and manifestation. It really does help.

My recent focus on heading to a zero-waste lifestyle is in my smile department. Plastic handles and bristles from toothbrushes are petroleum based and end up in the landfill. Empty plastic toothpaste tubes also make their way to the dump. I went with bamboo toothbrushes because they are biodegradable and way more sustainable than plastic. Even the packaging was done mindfully. All recycled paper and soy based ink for printing.I’m giving @bitetoothpastebits a first try and am excited: I really like the concept and hope it’s a solution that sticks. Bite is a teeth cleaning agent in pill form. It’s all natural, sulfate free and cruelty free. It’s packaged in glass and there’s a recycling program. They are based in sunny, Los Angeles, California. I went with the charcoal option in both since it’s a natural teeth whitener. I have not found a solution for floss (yet) that works for me. I’m open to suggestions! Smile big and smile bright. (and take care of our home planet)

I have a ways to go before I am truly living a zero-waste lifestyle but hot damn, I am striving for it. There is passion in my efforts and each day I’m improving. I’m a bit found if my newest trick to using less plastic: mess bags at the deli counter. It’s super easy since my items are weighed before they are slipped into their wrapping so there’s no concern about adjusting weight. All I have to do it ask that they use my bag instead of a plastic one. So far I’ve gotten nothing but smiles and winks as a reaction. Give it a go! It’s fun to stand out with a purpose, even if it’s just at the deli of your favorite grocery store. 🦋🌳
